What is Powerchair Football?
Powerchair Football is a modified version of the world game (also known as Powerchair Soccer) which allows anyone who relies on an electric wheelchair for daily mobility to play an inclusive, tactically relevant, fast and free flowing game. No matter the age, gender or disability, Powerchair Football caters for all (so long as you are able to drive your chair safely for yourself and others). Players in Western Australia and around the world include those with Muscular Dystrophy, Cerebral Palsy, Spinal Cord Injury and more.
Powerchair Football is a non contact sport with a 10km/h speed limit. It's made up of two teams of four who play over two twenty minutes halves with a larger than normal ball (330mm/13in) on a basketball sized court. Players' wheelchairs are fitted with foot guards that are used to push, hit and spin kick the ball. It's a tactical sport that requires skill, team work and communication. It combines the talent of the wheelchair user with the speed and power of the chair itself.
Powerchair Football was first played in the 1970s in France and was introduced to Australia in 2011.
